St. James's Hospital, construction of the new Bexley Wing, Beckett Street

St. James
January 2006. Image shows the construction of the new Bexley wing at St. James's Hospital, Beckett Street. It houses one of the country's largest cancer centres, the St. James's Institute of Oncology. The Bexley Wing was built at a cost of £220 million including specialist equipment. It opened in December 2007, welcoming the first patient on Christmas Eve. The Bexley wing provides 350 inpatient beds and employs 1600 staff.

When the foundations were being excavated for Bexley Wing, the houses that previously stood on the site had cellars. Unfortunately the cellars had been forgotten and a landslip occured causing powercuts and chaos to the hospital and surrounding area. Generators had to supply the hospital and commuters heading home after work had long delays!
