Description:
c1960s. In this image a woman sits on the grass beside beds of tulips at the edge of St. Peter's Graveyard. A man in a black jacket can be seen walking in York Street behind her. Behind him the perimeter walls of the corner of the bus station are visible. The cars on the right are in Duke Street. The factories dominating the background, right are William Read, Ltd, Wholesale costumiers and Walter Wragg Ltd. Motor Car Agents & Dealers, (Fiat), used car specialists, motor cycles, scooters and mopeds of Munro House, York Street. In the background left of centre the arched entrance to Priestley House, part of Quarry Hill flats is visible.

This photograph was taken by my mother of her friend during thier lunch break when they both worked at William Read Ltd . the date of the picture is June 1963

Nice picture, this, in as much as it is showing this particular section of Quarry Hill Flats (with its parabolic entrance), as NOT DOMINATING the nearby structure. Even though the flats as a whole made up a massive complex, it did not overpower the area as many modern structures do these days. At only eight storeys high the architect, R.A.H. Livet, seems to have got it right.
