Coteroyd House, carnival scene
c1920. Image shows people assembled for a carnival in the grounds of Coteroyd House seen in the background. The horses harnessed to the cart are decorated with horse brasses. Two men in bowler hats are standing on board the cart which is strewn with hay and contains a bull. Bull's horns decorate the cart and young man in an apron with a basket is mounted on the leading horse. Coteroyd House was the home of the Stanhope family. In the 19th century this family were large flock manufacturers. Later, one of them, Edwin Stanhope, became a large land and property owner in the district. The house no longer exists but was located in the Back Green area. Information by Bob Dennis. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.

A pleasure to see, as Edwin had passed away by 1907 I take it he wouldnt be in this picture but does anyone know which one Frank Leslie Stanhope is? Any info on this set of Stanhope's much appreciated, we descend through Edwin's brother Samuel.

My old boss Mr George Scott and his family lived here in the sixties I can remember doing repairs on the house, and once helping to build a stable block at the rear of the house.
