Churwell Hill, wintry scene painted by W.J. Monger
1940. Painting of a wintry scene on Churwell Hill by W.J. Monger. There is much snow on the ground and the house below All Saints Church is just visible on the right. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.

Mr. Monger was my Headmaster at Churwell School. While I believe that he was a sad person, having lost his son in the war, he was a great painter and showed us his work from time to time. I too am a painter and I owe my start to 'Billy Monger'. The painting is from my home at the top of Churwell hill.

It can be safely said that Mr. Monger did not use any 'artistic licence' in portraying the amount of snow here. Young people today will find it hard to believe that scenes like this were commonplace in those bygone winters. Some roads would remain like this for weeks. When the artist painted this scene, very few vehicles would have made it up the hill. The main mode of transport would have been by 'Shank's Pony'. The 1940's were my 'childhood years', and I have to admit to a bit of nostalgia here. Back then, winters seemed to be a whole season of enjoyment.
