Frost Corner, 174-176 Westerton Road
Undated. View of stone properties in Westerton Road, foreground, at the junction with Hollerton Lane, left. This area was known locally as Frost Corner as the row of cottages in Westerton Road was built by the Frost family. They managed the corner shop, the last proprietor being Miss Frost who lived until the 1960s. After that date the shop at 174-176 Westerton Road was run by Dennis Trafford who installed electric lighting to replace the original gaslights.

The Frost family moved to what was then called “Chadwick Row” on Westerton Rd in 1913 as tenants of the licensed grocers at the end of the row adjacent Allerton (since renamed Hollerton) Lane. The name Chadwick Row derived from a Robert Chadwick who was listed as a Grocer there (at 176 Westerton Lane) in the 1891 Census. On 24th January 1920 Henry Frost bought “all the 6 dwelling houses and shop site” from Robert Chadwick’s estate. The agreed price was GBP1400 with a mortgage from the vendor Mr Wm Wordsworth Scarth, of Moorhouse, Stanley of GBP 800. On 24th January 1920 the mortgage was repaid to WW Scarth. Henry Frost and his wife Letitia Lunn operated the shop until Henry died on 29th February 1948 then Letitia ran it until she died on 4th October 1949. Their daughter Miss Nellie Frost then ran the shop until she retired in 1958 when she sold the shop to Mr an Mrs J Trafford. Miss Frost then moved to live at Nos 168/170 Westerton Rd. Until approximately 1958, these had previously been numbers 73 and 71 respectively. She converted these to a single dwelling in the row and lived there until she died on 8th November 1989. She had lived at Frost’s corner since moving there in 1913 when she was 3 years old.
