If you look passed DRIVERS you can see this picture must predate the building of the gas holder thst is there now.Behind Drivers is the RAILWAY CLUB where my farther was president of the club,some time in the 40s or50s.It is still there with its sprung dance floor up stairs in the concert room.I can see me waiting for the tram into town if i close my eyes,going to the MAGICSTIC dance hall were i met my wife in 1958,we are looking forward to our GOLDEN wedding anaversery next year.

At Christmas, the light bulbs were changed to coloured ones and as children, we always tried to sit under our favourite colour. The long seats were facing each other and made of slatted wood.

I started work at Driver’s furniture shop a year after leaving school in the early sixties until I got married in 1969. I was the general dogsbody – drivers mate, taking in furniture deliveries, changing the window display, updating the stock ledger and even going round on a Saturday afternoon collecting bad debt in the area because Jack Clark and his father who ran the business financed their own hire purchase Eventually, I became the delivery driver and dogsbody. Delivering furniture to the back to back houses in the area was always interesting. Many’s the sash window that I took apart in order to pull a wardrobe up into a bedroom. It is, without doubt, the best job I’ve ever had because it was a family run firm and I was treated just like an extended member of the family. Unfortunately, when I got married money had to take precedence over job satisfaction.

I used to deliver carpets/rugs/lino etc. to Driver's and Turner's in the 60s/70s. I remember Arthur Newton being the van driver and another driver James Kilgour. Stan Gardiner was at Turner's and later became manager, his son Andrew worked with us at Brayshay's carpet warehouse for a while [when not golfing]!! We had a lad who was Arthur's cousin I think-Trevor Hayton? who kept dogs/rabbits/pigeons/ferrets etc.
