1950s. View of Nippet Lane showing tram no.523 on duty as a 'special car'. This was one of 90 'Feltham' trams acquired from London in 1950, though only 83 saw active service. The junction with East Beckett Street is on the left of the photo, while the chimneys of Burmantofts Pottery can be seen in the distance on the right.

To the rear of the tram can be seen part of the building and playground of St Stephen's School. Beyond the school is a white painted shop that was,if I recall correctly,an off-licence. I can almost taste the Burmantofts smog and grime in this photo.

Just to the right of the lamp post, the large building partially hidden by the two poles, is the Regent Cinema on Torre Road, now a tile and furniture shop.
