Description: late 1930s.
Aerial view showing Quarry Hill flats under construction, centre. Snaking down from the top left is York Road next to an area marked as 'York Road re-development area'. Eastgate roundabout is visible towards the bottom right with St. Peter's Street coming off towards the right edge. The future site of Saxton Gardens, tower blocks of residential flats, can be seen towards the top of the right edge. Streets of old red brick terraced housing had been cleared as part of the city's slum clearance programme. Most of the properties were cleared between 1936 and 1938. Because of the outbreak of World War II Saxton Gardens was not built until the 1950s.
