East Ardsley Colliery (Holliday
Description:
Undated. View shows East Ardsley Colliery, also known as Holliday's Pit. Robert Holliday & Sons started to sink two shafts here in 1872, on land leased from the Cardigan estate. A third shaft was sunk in 1877. By 1899 the colliery produced 200,000 tons annually, making it the 11th largest Yorkshire coalfield. In 1923 it was taken over by Henry Briggs, Son & Co., who ran it until nationalisation in 1947. The colliery was closed in 1968 and the site landscaped.

If you stood where the photographer was now, you would see nothing but trees and fields. There is no sign of the pit or the steelworks behind, lower down the hill, with the white steam or smoke emmiting from it.The pit and steelworks was also serviced by many railway line links to the huge railway sidings down hill, extreme right of the picture. These no longer exist either and only the main line Leeds-London and local lines are there now. On the left of the road, out of shot, was the pit baths. Which as a building remained and was modernised to house a photocopier based business called Eurocopy. This building was demolished some years ago and the modern new construction is much more attractive
