Leeds Experimental Trolley-bus, no. 503
Undated. Postcard showing Leeds Experimental Trolleybus no. 503. Trolleybuses were similar to trams in that they used overhead power cables but they ran on normal roads instead of tramlines. They were used in Leeds on more rural routes unsuitable for trams, e.g. to Farnley and Drighlington, and from Guiseley to Otley. The first trolleybuses ran to Farnley in 1911 and to Otley in 1915 but they were not hugely successful and as buses became cheaper they eventually took over, with the last trolleybus running to Otley on 26th July 1928.
