Middleton Broom Colliery, Town Street, old winding engine
Undated. View of an old winding engine located at the top of Middleton Broom Colliery, off Town Street. It was used to draw wagons up the steep incline between Broom Pit and Middleton Town Street. The incline was known as Rope Hill.

Opposite these buildings on the other side of Town Sreet where the row of shops are now, there were stables that used to house the pit ponies I believe.

The rope way carried slack from the Broome pit through to the nutty slack which was behind the conservative club before most houses were built.we used to play rugby and cricket there. I lived in Mt.Pleasant and used to walk down the rope hill to the pit passing the deep waters on the way.
