Bentley Lane, Council School

Bentley Lane, Council School
Description:
c1920s. View shows Bentley Lane Council School, seen from the junction of Bentley Lane (left) and Winthorpe Street (right). Now Bentley Primary School, it was built around the 1920s. The photo presumably dates from that time as a note on the back says 'New Council School, Bentley Lane'.

I went to this school from 1934 until 1942 when I left aged 14. Dennis West, Angus Turner, James Weir, James Noble were my friends then. I wonder where they all are now in 2012?? A great school with Jas Wade as the headmaster who laid it on with the 'stick' when you were not paying attention. Three on each hand! The same discipline should apply today. I went on to become the Chief Building Surveyor of the 4th biggest MBC in the Kingdom, so how they taught must have been right! Wonderful days!

How nice to see Bentley Lane . I was there in the 1930s. Remember 2 teachers both named Taylor, and a Miss Bratt who would thrash any left-hander on the Knuckles with a wooden rule. I got a Senior City scholarship in 1938 and went to Leeds Modern. Miss Bratt left after Dad visited the Education Office! Nowadays she would have been in Court.Boys and girls were separate.(theoretically!) Mr. Taylor used to bring a radio to class for us to hear "Out with Romany" We had lots of handicrafts, such as bookbinding, use of hand tools etc. and play-acting "Wind in the Willows"
