Description: Undated. Aerial view looking north-east showing the Beechwood area of Seacroft at the bottom. The junction of Wetherby Road and Ring Road Seacroft can be seen on the left. Monkswood Rise and Monkswood Avenue are at the bottom centre with Lime Pits Wood on the bottom right. User Comments: Name: Bob Thomas Comment: We moved to Monkswood Rise in 1957. This pic must pre date this as the site of our house is just a patch of grass!The junction of Ring Road /Wetherby Road is now a roundabout . I remember this as a junction- with the Ring road traffic giving way to the Wetherby road traffic . There were several accidents here as I remember -great stuff for the local urchins- of which I was one ! The old junction is underneath the present roundabout . I watched it being constructed .Every night as the workmen clocked off we would clock on and mess about in the piles of sand and gravel. Also on this junction were the remains of a second world war ack ack gun enplacement complete with search light -sadly demolished when I was a nipper.Piles of concrete blocks and twisted metal with loads of battery cells( where is elf n safety ?!!!)-not a trace remains now . Lower down Wetherby road were the remains of an anti tank concrete barrier.Who said a German invasion was a fantasy ?!!! Roundhay grange was a farm to the left of the picture . A grange is an out lying farm. In this case of Kirkstall abbey.It is said there is an under ground passage from here to kirkstall . A long way ! best get the bus ! There were several reports of ghosts when I was a kid including a tale of black robed monks in the woods ( once a source of lime for early iron smelting) All in all I was happy in Seacroft .It was a good place to grow up with open spaces and fulfilling the ideals of those public spirited individuals who sought to free working people from grime, insanitary conditions and low expectations. Gypsies used to camp here and I remember being terrified at seeing them outside their caravans and piebold coloured horses tethered nearby. All the exagerated tales of Gypoes scared the hell out of us. We used to go chumping here as well for bonfire night[we didn,t know any better].There was always a rope swing to pretend you were Tarzan. Kids today can,t imagine the fun we had back then.
