May 1959. View from the front garden of number 227 Broad Lane looking across to Wellington House. The drive to Wellington House can be just glimpsed in the background, left. Out of shot to the left is a bank of trees bordering onto Wood Lane. The 1934 Ordnance Survey map of Bramley (north) clearly shows Wellington House as a large semi-detached dwelling and lists Alfred Thomas Murtland occupying number 318 and Guy Edward Longden (designer) occupying 316 Broad Lane. Carl Wadkin is pictured with his mother while on a visit to the house of his Grandparents. His father, Samuel Wadkin, lived here from about 1930 to 1952. A woman is seen pushing a pram along Broad Lane in the background.

I was born on Moorside Terrace, just above Wellington House so knew the area well, at the back of the house there was the oil works, owned by the Murtland family and run solely by a chap called Fred Greenwood

This was the home of my 4 times great grandfather, John Cliff, born 22/41769, died 19/9/1848. He had 2 children - Joseph Cliff born 13/8/1806, died 31/7/1879, and Maria Cliff, born 16/7/1808, died 5/2/1883. Joseph married Alice Dewhirst and lived at Weston Flatts, Wortley, and Maria married David Yewdall and lived at Calverley Grange, Calverley, Leeds. I have visited Weston Flatts but would be interested to know if anyone else has more information on Wellington House, particularly a picture/photo.
