Armley Road, The Albion

Armley Road, The Albion
Description:
1st January 2010. View of The Albion public house on Armley Road, which is closed. The building dates from the 1860s when it comprised of two shops, one originally a beerhouse which became the Fleece Inn in 1873, and the other which became the Albion Hotel around 1886. Both were later bought by Peter Walker & Sons. After the First World War the council began refusing to renew licences to uneconomic pubs and the Fleece and Albion were threatened, but were given a reprieve when they agreed to a merger instead. The name The Albion was chosen for the merged pub, which was sold to Tetley's in 1925.

I worked at Greenwood & Batley Ltd from 1956 until 1965 and on many occasions had a pint in the Albion.

I was in the albion after a long absence. I had to make my excuses & leave. From the outside I noticed the outside sign was changed. Why? In 1980 they uncovered the original Tetley Walker sign, which was restored. Excellent. I was in the taproom with my young son, my get out of gaol free card. I'm sure I noticed the hand pumps had been removed. Horror of horrors! I went to Wrens pub in Leeds town centre instead, where I enjoyed an excellent pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord & a regular informed me of Mr Foley's Alehouse on the Headrow. A fruitful visit to my hometown. Harry Marks had the pub in the 60's when my father William Watson "Master Builder of Leeds" frequented. Norman Foster was there until late 70's, followed by Ken Carroll, followed by Trevor Galloway. Other names I remember were Jackie Parker an Australian landlady & Chris Tremlett. If you see my other posting you'll realise it's such a shame.
