Black and white image showing the main costume study room at Lotherton Hall, located on the first floor. The costume galleries are part of the extension on the west side of the house built for Colonel Gascoigne in 1903. The costume study room was provided as a learning experience for school groups and those studying costume. Various examples are on display here including the gown on the left which dates from c1770. It is cut from Spitalfield silk brocade back looping into a polonaise over a quilted petticoat. The costume galleries were converted from a series of guest bedrooms in the 1970s. One of the most important collections is that of Kenneth Sanderson, purchased by the council in 1949.
