Green Lane, filming of
1962. View shows a scene from the film 'Billy Liar' being shot on location at a site off Green Lane, with Green Lane Primary School in the background. Demolition was taking place of terraced housing in the area, so the presence of semi-demolished houses added authenticity to a scene depicting a ruined city. This scene, which shows a group of women marching under a banner proclaiming 'Viva Ambrosia', is part of a dream world imagined by the character Billy Fisher, otherwise known as Billy Liar, who sees himself as the head of the imaginary state of Ambrosia.

I can remember watching a scene being shot in Lawnswood/Ireland Wood at the junction of Spennithorne Avenue, Spennithorne Drive and Wynford Terrace. Billy Liar was marching up Spennithorne Avenue followed by men in battle dress and various armoured vehicles.

my parents and I lived in Havelock Street which ran from Green Lane down to Wellington Rd and was directly opposite the centre of the school where the arch appears (see photo). The filming appears to be in what remains of Havelock Street after we moved out in 1961 to go to the new Cow Close estate .
