Green Lane, filming of 'Billy Liar'

Green Lane, filming of
1962. View shows the actor Tom Courtenay during the shooting of the film 'Billy Liar' in which he played the title role. He is seen here in part of a dream sequence in which he drives a tank through the streets of his imaginary land Ambrosia. This scene was shot in a cleared area off Green Lane, opposite Green Lane Primary School; other locations for the film included The Headrow and Town Hall in Leeds as well as areas of Bradford.

I watched the filming in the ruined street opposite Green Lane School, around 1962, just before I left school. We watched the filming from the flat school roof. In the Tong Rd shops there were Roman soldiers & German soldiers, good stuff.
