Description:
Undated. View of a site off Chapeltown Road where a large area of terraced housing has been demolished as part of a major redevelopment of the area. St. Clement's Church, on the left, is still standing here but this too was shortly to be demolished. Much of the area is now taken up with Thomas Danby College and playing fields.

That would have been the Reverend Gordon Cooper Wood. He was known to go down to one of the local pubs from time to time to have a pint with his parishioners. I found this a very sad photograph. I knew this area well as a boy. I knew the houses would be demolished - as back-to-backs they were by definition unfit to live in - but this picture shows a desolation that I would prefer not to remember.

I am the son of the Vicar of St Clements, REV Gordon Wood, who lived in the vicarage from 1954 to 1965. I had a wonderful time in this community and have many memories associated both with the church and sheepscar and chapeltown road at that time.

Some of my ancestors baptised there 1865-1869 - just been looking them up on Bradford Library microfiche copies. Seems 1865 was about the date for building of this church ? Sad to see pictures of dereliction and its eventual demise.
