c1940. Image shows Mrs. Laura Gwendolen Douglas Gascoigne on the terrace steps of Lotherton Hall (centre) with her grandchildren, Yvonne Trench-Gascoigne and Douglas Wilder Trench-Gascoigne. Mrs. Gascoigne created the terrace and gardens in the late nineteenth century and early 1900s. She died in 1949. Douglas, here wearing the unifom of a subaltern in the Coldstream Guards, was promoted to lieutenant, and later captain, and was killed in action in Normandy in August 1944. Lotherton Hall is visible in the background. From the collection of the Wingfield family.
