View of the Main Hall of Lotherton Hall looking in the direction of the Medal Room. On the left is the chimney-piece dating from 1696 which was originally in situ at Huddlestone Hall and is made from stone from the Huddlestone quarries owned by the Gascoigne family. The portrait on the wall, centre, is that of Sir Edward Gascoigne and dates from c1724. It is by Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746.) Sir Edward Gascoigne married Mary, daughter of Sir Francis Hungate of Huddlestone Hall, in 1726. The carved settle dates from 1756 and is inscribed in Latin. Translated it says 'God sees those thoughts that hid in your soul at night'. Behind it is a glass case containing a large model of the Tudor ship, Revenge, part of the collection of Colonel Frederick R.T.T. Gascoigne. The hall and staircase belong to the 1903 western extension to Lotherton Hall by the then occupant Colonel Gascoigne and his wife, Mrs. Laura Gwendolen Gascoigne. At the time of the photograph Lotherton Hall was owned by his son Sir Alvary Gascoigne.
