Description: July 1981.
View of Roundhay Road looking north-east, taken at the time of major riots in the area around Chapeltown which resulted in all the shops being boarded up. The riots were part of a nationwide unrest with similar troubles occurring in Toxteth and Brixton, and though primarily racially motivated were also brought about by the social deprivation of the area. Shops seen here include Moons fancy goods at no. 214 Roundhay Road on the right, with Lambton View in the foreground and Lambton Grove behind. Photograph courtesy of Stephen Howden.
