Description:
July 1981. Looking south along Harehills Road from the junction with Roundhay Road. All the shops are boarded up due to riots which had been taking place all over the Chapeltown area, at a time of national unrest which also saw riots in Brixton and Toxteth. Though many of the shops tried to remain open the area appears to be almost deserted. Photograph courtesy of Stephen Howden.

Oh dear what a mess. On the left of this picture there was a menswear shop owned by Miss Caroline and Miss Muriel Coulter. They actually lived next door to me when I lived with my parents in Hetton Road. Also, there was a really good shoe shop where my dad was known. He always bought the same style shoes - one pair in brown and one pair in black. I think maybe once a year. He hated shopping. I think he only went to that shop, and Burton's Taylors for his suits and jackets only because he had to try things on. On the right of the photo there used to be a Coffee Bar. The "in" place in the early 50s!

Remember Hernandos,lots of wonderful memories,good friends great girls. Along with a few others,Mick,Gordon,Peter, Colin we were the first to enrol at the club owned by Mike Brash. Names fade but memories last.
