Easterly Road, Barncroft Towers

Easterly Road, Barncroft Towers
Undated. View from the junction of Easterly Road (to the right) and Wetherby Road (left) looking at Barncroft Towers. This block of high-rise flats built in the early 1960s was one of a group of four built around the same time, which also included Barncroft Court (just visible on the right edge), and Barncroft Grange and Barncroft Heights (off the picture). Photograph courtesy of Stephen Howden.

Just to the right of these tower blocks, on the top of the hill, an Army Anti-Aircraft Gun Site was operational throughout the 2nd World War. One gun seemed to be much larger than the others, was far noisier and did collateral damage to many of the houses on the Grange Parks and Fearnvilles. Our ceilings were badly cracked. I was always in trouble for rushing out asap to collect 'shrapnel' which was often rather warm.
