Skelton Grange Power Station, aerial view

Skelton Grange Power Station, aerial view
Undated. Aerial view of Skelton Grange Power Station showing five cooling towers and three chimneys. This coal-fired power station was designed by Reginald Ridgeway and built in 2 stages. The 'A' station was built in the late 1940s and the 'B' station between 1955 and 1962. The two towers to the left belong to the 'A' station and the other three to the 'B' station. A fourth tower at the 'B' station was demolished between 1982-3, dating the photo to after this time, possibly after the closure of the 'A' station in the mid 1980s as it appears inactive here. The rest of the power station closed in the mid 1990s and it has since been demolished with very litle remaining today. At present (2011) plans have been submitted by Biffa to build a rubbish-fuelled power plant on the site.

The buildings at the bottom of the photo are part of IMI's Yorkshire Copper Works, Stourton based site, at one time one of the largest employers in the Leeds area. It covered some 190+ acres and produced copper & plastic based products shipped all over the world. Many ships around the world had products on board, plus millions of homes and businesses. When the plant turned off much of its equipment late afternoon, the power station certainly new about it, having to descale their production of electricity. The site began an explosive operation in the late 70's early 80's and the bangs reverberated around the cooling towers, allegedly cracking one of them. Barges of coal were constantly moored across the canal from the site with drop cranes offloading from them all day at least 5 days a week. Whilst pits had mountains of spoil the power station had mountains of coal along the banks of the canal and river. The canal is in the forefront and the river just behind and tree lined on the far side.
