Description:
1914. Image taken at Kirkstall Road Tram Works in 1914 where there is a demonstration of a Railless Electric Traction Co. Trolley Bus, car number 50. Leeds and Bradford both opened the first trolleybus services to run in Britain, on 20th June 1911.

Trackless cars 501-504 were supplied by The Railless Electric Traction Company to Leeds City Tramways. They were the first to run to Farnley. Car 503 ran from City Square to Farnley and was withdrawn in 1919. Source: Leeds Transport on Postcards by Jim Soper, Leeds Transport Historical Society, 2012. Trackless cars (Trolleybuses) 501-504, built 1911 by Railless Electric Traction Co. Body Builder: Hurst, Nelson Co. Motor Maker: Siemens Bros & Co Ltd. In 1911, both Leeds and Bradford introduced trolleybuses to the Railless design. The onset of World War I had a dramatic effect on the development of the trolleybus. Since most of the equipment had been manufactured in Germany, the enactment of the Trading With the Enemy Act, of 1914, meant that spares became unobtainable. In 1916, as a result of this, and other difficulties, the Railless Electric Traction Company went into receivership, eventually being sold to Short Brothers, who formed a new company Railless Ltd., to develop the system further.
