G.E.C. Controller, Horsfield type car
Undated. Image shows the G.E.C. controller of a tram car designed by R.L. Horsfield, part of a series built between 1930 and 1931. There were 50 cars in the series numbering between 205 and 254.

I imagine that this image brings back memories for thousands of "KIDS OF YESTERYEAR". Remember tearing down the steps, just before your stop, and pounding on the bell plunger which was set in the floor, and then jumping of the tram well before it came to a stop. The conductor, who was usually stood at the bottom of the stairs didn't stand a chance of stopping the more or less continuous ringing, especially if there were several young bucks charging down the stairs at the same time. And of course the driver couldn't help - he was at the other end of the tram. If I were given the chance, I'd love to do it again, although I certainly wouldn't be jumping off while the tram was in motion, which of course would spoil half the fun.

Not only stamping on the bell pedal, but also twirling the rear brake handle right round before jumping off, so that the driver couldn't start off again until the conductor had released it!
