23rd November 1965. View shows a footbridge over Low Beck by Holbeck Lane. Low Beck is a continuation of Hol Beck. In the background are the premises of C.H. Worthington Ltd., builders and contractors, and Hornsey & Son, printers, both of Holbeck Lane.

I lived in Holbeck as a young lad in the 1950s. My grandfather's Working Mens Hostel was a 100yds or so from this picture and I remember climbing down to this beck and daring to jump across. No one knew how deep it was because it was so cloudy and it flowed quite quickly. Our main aim was to catch water rats. In fact I now think there weren't any water rats but just ordinary rats that could swim. We never caught any,they were too quick. Not a healthy place but it hasn't seemed to have done me any harm; I'm 65 now.
