Portrait of Marjory and Guy Ragland Phillips
c1911. Portrait of two children taken in the garden of their home of 11 Woodbine Terrace. The elder child is Marjory Sara Ragland Phillips (born 1905). She is nursing her baby doll in one arm and also holding her brother's hand. He is Guy Dibdin Ragland Phillips (born 1909.) They are the children of Councillor Edmund Ragland Phillips, and his wife, Elaine (nee Grimshaw). Elaine was the daughter of the Yorkshire artist John Atkinson Grimshaw. Edmund Ragland Phillips was Councillor of the Headingley ward between 1907 and 1911. Guy Ragland Phillips grew up to become a journalist and author.

I still read Guy Ragland Phillips book "Brigantia".It's a fascinating read with lots of obscure facts and conjecture about legends in and around Leeds. The bit I've always remembered is the authors father telling him that Britain is the best country in the world. Yorkshire is the best county,Leeds is the best city and Headingley is the best suburb.

Following on from Jim Shephards' comment:- I have to concur with him regarding the book 'BRIGANTIA'. It has content which will have allowed many to see the world around them in a somewhat different light. As for myself, Guy Ragland Phillips set me out on a journey that is still ongoing - - - Only a last breath will see it end. It is at least fifty years since since I first read the book, and like, Jim, I too still like to re-visit it. However, there is something that I cannot agree with. The last sentence in Jim's comment reads:- - - - "Yorkshire is the best county, Leeds is the best city and Headingley is the best suburb." - - - Surely there must have been a grave typing error here. Everyone knows that BEESTON in not only the best, but the greatest suburb in Leeds.
