Description: Undated. View of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal from Gotts Park. In the centre Redcote Bridge is visible and Pasture Hills are in the background. Adjacent to the canal is a canal basin with mooring posts for boats. User Comments: Name: Mick Agar Comment: I lived in the nearby Salisbury's as a child till 1954. That fallen tree trunk was there in those days. The basin referred to in the notes was actually a sort of canal siding serving the Kirkstall Power Station. We used to watch horse-drawn barges of coal being unloaded there by cranes with grabber buckets. The strange shaped building to the right of the picture, just behind the man on the barge, was part of the conveyor system taking coal to the power station. In those days all the gates leading to the towpath were locked, so it was inaccessible to the public. I WAS WITH A FRIEND ONE TIME WHO TOOK ME THROUGH GOTTS AND UP TO ARMLEY PARK AND LEFT ME THERE AT A PLAYGROUND, QUITE SCARY WHEN YOU DO NOT KNOW THE AREA. (SOME FRIEND) Date: 21-Apr-2011 Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: Dave Milbourne Comment: My wife and I walked over Redcote Bridge this morning with our Dog (Easter Monday) and I walked this path with the dog last Thursday (21st April 2011). It is now well over grown with Trees and bushes. I think the canal basin referred to is Aire Valley Marina. The iron railings in the photo are still there. Date: 25-Apr-2011 Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: Julie Hubbard (Tring) Comment: I have walked along this path countless times with my mum when we were going to Gotts Park & the flower gardens. This was the early 60's. Then from around 1966 me and my friends would virtually spend all of the summer holidays on Armley park...so this path was well trodden by us all as, just a bit further up, there was a gap in the railings and us girls would paddle in the canal as there was a shallow bit that allowed us to cool our toes off !! We were never bothered by anyone and our mums never worried either. This (and other photo's on this site) evoke such carefree, happy memories....
