Arena, Roundhay Park

Arena, Roundhay Park
Description:
28th April 2005. Image shows the arena in Roundhay Park, a hollow area which in the time of Thomas Nicholson in the early to mid nineteenth century, had originally been intended as a lake. A scheme carried out in 1894, using the labour of unemployed people, created a sporting arena here with cycle track. In more recent years it has been the venue for pop concerts attracting huge audiences. For instance, the Rolling Stones played here in 1982 in front of an audience od 120,000 and at the Love Parade in July 2000 there were 300,000 people. Other artists who have performed at the arena over the years are Bruce Springsteen, Genesis, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Simple Minds, U2 and Robbie Williams. In the background, right, is Hill 60 named in memory of those Leeds men who lost their lives in the First World War battles, near Hill 60, Ypres.
