c1908. View of Leeds Union Workhouse situated on Beckett Street from a postcard posted on 19th February 1908. Just to the left of centre is the Workhouse chapel. On the far left is another building which is part of the workhouse/infirmary complex; all are now part of St. James's Hospital.

Beckett Street itself is not visible in this picture, it would be about fifty-yards to the right beyond high iron railings. By 1908, Beckett Street was a main road with trams. This photo is - and was, taken completely within the grounds of the original estate. Apart from the old wing now used as a museum, the building to the left, and the chapel, are all that are left of the original estate. As a child in the 40's and 50's, I lived directly opposite what was then this very forboding place that most elderly folk feared.
