Old Oak, postcard

Old Oak, postcard
Undated. Colour-tinted postcard of Otley Road showing the ancient Shire Oak tree on the right, surrounded by railings for protection. This tree, which is believed to have stood for over a thousand years, is in a decaying state here and would eventually succumb to its age, finally collapsing in May 1941. A tram is seen on the road.

This image is somewhat of an eye-opener, showing us, as it does, how the overall width of the road at this point had been much widened since the late 19th century, when this oak tree sat snugly in a cottage garden, behind a stone wall. Have a look at picture number, 8913.
