It is nice to see the old Yorkshire Penny Bank in the view at the bottom of Tong Road, the building is still there but no longer a bank.

The photograph could have been the 50s, because it was like that when I used to travel up & down Tong Road. Every shop you required could be found in Wellington Rd and Tong Rd. Better then than the stupid supermarkets (the rip off merchants).

I agree with Terrance, you could get everything from a loaf of bread to a three piece suite from Tong Road & Wellington Road. There were shoe shops, hairdressers, butchers, tripe shops and a horse meat shop (we went there for our dog's meat and my father used to say it looked better than our meat). There were drapers, toy shops and even two cinemas (Crown & Lyric), also a tailors shop so the gentlemen could get measured and have a suit made.

I remember walking up Tong Road with my mother pushing a pram in the 1950's.There was also a shop called The Murder Shop. They had a slogan which went on the lines of "We don't cut prices, we murder em"

I lived in Fifteenth Ave and remember all the shops mentioned by Terrance & Sheila. Ive spent many hours in the Crown & Lyric. And the pubs - Crown, Beech etc. One of my school friends parents has a 'pot' shop in Tong Road, her name was Valerie Phillips and my then boyfriend worked at the grocers shop. he was called Geoff Garbutt.

Geoff had a brother called michael langdon (I think). Gwen was a lovely jolly person, they lived at the back of Vernons. I was only 16yrs at the time. I loved living in Tong rd. Geoff introduced me to my first pub near Wingate Junction, the landlord let us sneak in & hide behind the door. I wonder where Geoff & Michael are now??
