Tong Road, looking west
18th August 1981. View looking west along Tong Road. The Lyric Cinema is seen on the left, while on the right are the rears of houses on Southfield Mount and Cricketers Terrace. The Lyric opened on 9th December 1922 with a showing of 'The Three Musketeers' starring Douglas Fairbanks. After closing and re-opening twice in the late 1970s it finally shut down on 1st December 1988, the last film being 'Good Morning Vietnam'. It has recently been converted into a church but in September 2011 temporarily re-opened as a cinema for a series of events as part of a Heritage Programme in conjunction with the making of a film by Lucy Skaer entitled 'Film for an abandoned projector'.

my mother used to take me to the lyric every saturday night in the early 1950s. there also used to be a toy shop around where the bus stop is, i used drool over what seemed like 100s of dinky toys in the window, now and again my mam would buy me one just to shut me up. after buying a toy and after watching a dean martin/jerry lewis film days did not come any better! not even the 2 mile walk home to armley did not spoil it. I hope they keep the lyric neon sign on the building which still worked untilfairly recently.

Happy days, a trip to the pictures and a bag of chips on the way home from the fish shop at the bottom of Main road. The first time I ever went to the cinema was to the Lyric to see The Wizard of Oz.
