Mention 'Cobbles' to anyone who lived in Leeds and some may have fond memories. Others wouls recall how difficult it was to walk on them in bad weather or keep a buffet balanced whilst your mum or gran was perched on it, putting out the washing. When these homes across the whole of Leeds, mainly in the 50's were demolished. What I find amazing is, where is the mountain of cobbles, they were about the size and shape of an uncut loaf of bread. So there must be a huge pile somewhere in Leeds. I know some streets were covered up if the street position remained but most areas have changed considerably enough in layout, that most of the cobbles would have had to have been removed to lay drains etc. Also where did all of the coal tar used to bond them together go? Are there any council workers who could let us know, similarly were all or any of the cast iron street signs retained in a long forgotten store , or melted down? One things for certain they didn't get many 'pots holes' in them as with the modern day tarmac.
