View of Modder Place showing children in the street. The young girl in the background is Lesley Bransby who was brought up in one of the two bedroomed red brick back-to-back terraced homes on the left, number 18 Modder Place. She was the youngest of six girls and it appears that she is setting off to the shops armed with two baskets, one a traditional 'gondola' style. She is watched by two young children and is heading in the direction of Madder Avenue which runs across the background between Station Road and Carr Crofts. On the corner of Modder Avenue and Station Road was number 27, Ridsdale's Grocer's but for more serious shopping it was only a short walk along Station Road into Armley Town Street. The Bransby family lived opposite Blakey's Malleable Castings in the huge Carr Crofts iron works, part of which can be seen on the right. Lesley's father, William Bransby, was employed there. The firm manufactured rubber soles, heels and toe plates for shoes and boots as well as belt fasteners. The more modern building in the background was also part of Blakey's.
