Early 1950s group portrait of staff and students of the University of Leeds Natural History Society, thought to have been taken in University Road. The group includes the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Professor of Zoology, Eric A. Spaul, Ph.D., D.Sc., Professor of Botany, Irene Manton, B.A., Sc.D., Ph.D., and lecturer in Botany, Professor Reginald Dawson Preston, Ph.D. Professor Manton is noted for her study of ferns and algae using the electron microscope and worked with Professor R.D. Preston (1909-2000) who was a biophysicist. Between them they organised the purchase of one of the first Philips EM 100 microscopes for the Baines wing of the Botany Department of the University of Leeds. Some of the members of the group can be identified as follows; seated on chairs on the front row are Professor I.M. Manton, 3rd in from the left, Professor R.D. Preston, 4th in from the left, A. Wesley, 9th in from the left, E. Nicolai, Professor E. Spraul and Jennifer ? are 10th, 11th and 12th from the left respectively, 2nd in from the right is M. "Sam" Browne and next to her on the extreme right is C. Rylands. L. I. Scott is seated on the ground at the front. On the second row of chairs, 2nd in from the left is P. Daniels, 5th from the left is M. Shivas and 7th from the left is K. Jowett. Of the men standing on the back row are 3rd from the left, G. Cooke, 4th from the left, R. Peckett, 5th from the left, "Boy" Jennings and 6th from the left, D. Tunnington.
