October 1983. View of terraced housing on Armley Grove Place showing no.48 (right) and 50 (left). The houses, which form back-to-backs with Fitzarthur Street, have small front yards, with a washing line covering that of no.50. They were shortly to be demolished.

Mrs Dawson lived at no 48 until they were demolished, she used to tell us off for kicking the football at the gable end wall.

I was amused to read Melanie's comment about Mrs Dawson. I lived at No 49 Fitzarthur Street (the house that backed on to No 50, pictured). Our next door neighbour was Mrs Mitchell and her house backed onto Mrs Dawson's. Mrs Dawson and Mrs Mitchell were pals. We also played football against this gable end and they would complain as the ball was rattling the china in Mrs Mitchell's cocktail cabinet! I don't know what time zone Melanie is referring to but my experience was before 1961 as that is when we left the area.

In response to Ray's comments. We lived at 42 Armley Grove Place from 1966 to 1979, we moved as part of the 'slum' clearance, we lived in the 3rd house down from Middle Cross Street.

Mrs Dawson was my Aunt,she lived there with my uncle Fred. I stayed there in the 60's and we had to take a big key up the street to a yard with three toilets in. I remember Mrs Mitchell and the lady at number 50. She had a lot of children and they took me to Armley baths.There was an Indian family over the road and one of their sons was called Nathies or something similar.
