Middle Cross Street, junction with Fitzarthur Street
Spring 1984. View shows rows of back-to-back terraced housing leading off Middle Cross Street. In the foreground is Fitzarthur Street, with no.54 facing the camera. Further back are Fearnley Street, Gledhow Street and Simpson Street. These houses were all soon to be demolished.

This photograph brings back some memories! I lived opposite this house at No 49 up to 1961 when I was 11 years old. Everyday life was much harder then. Televisions were a luxury, fitted carpets a pipe dream, inside toilets non-existant and "bath night" was every Friday (the bath was under the kitchen worktop!) My pals at this time who lived in Fitzarthur Street were-John Henshaw, Paul Bennett, Michael Best, Ronnie McDonald, Martin Thompson, David Linley. Others who lived in Fearnley Street were-Nigel Moore, Nigel Duckham & Keith Oddy. We used to play on some waste ground at the other side of Hall Lane affectionately known as "The Gardens". Further over towards Armley Road was another piece of waste ground called "The Maltkins". Happy times and good to look back on.
