Description: 1971.
View of the Garden Gate public house on Waterloo Road, seen from Hardisty's Yard. This Grade II* listed building dates from c1903 but there has been an inn on the site since at least 1833 and it was first referred to as the Garden Gate in 1849. The pub was earmarked for demoliton in the late 1960s but was saved following a campaign by local people; however all around it went, including Waterloo Road and Hardisty's Yard, and the pub is now right in the middle of a 1970s housing estate. Consequently it was not a success for a long time and was threatened with closure again in the 2000s, before being taken over by the Leeds Brewery who are now trying to restore it to its former glory.
