Hi everyone – A search on Ancestry reveals that Kate Peniston was originally from Bristol. She married George Gomersall at Hunslet in 1896. In 1901, the family were living at 35 Iveridge Grove, Hunslet. The only child shown in the 1901 Census is David Gomersall who was born in 1900. In 1910, the family were living at 159 Jack Lane, Hunslet. The children shown in the 1910 Census were David Peniston Gomersall (B. 1900), Florence Kathleen Gomersall (B. 1902) and Ada Gomersall (B. 1905). Clarice May Gomersall was born on 12th August 1897 and baptised on 8th September 1897. The address shown for both her, and her parents, is 4 Iveridge Grove. She is not shown in the 1901 Census, but in the 1911 Census she was living with her grandmother, Mary Ann Peniston, at 13 Parkfield Mount, Beeston. Clarice married John William Smith at Beeston on 2nd February 1918 and at that time they were both living at 13 Parkfield Mount. She died in Leeds in 1977. The photograph displayed does not appear to be similar to the other Leodis photographs shown of houses in the Iveridges or Parkfields but there are no precise street matches of street names. The houses shown in Jack Lane are of all different types, as it is quite a long road, but there still doesn’t seem to be anything similar to the photograph displayed. - Ian

The 1901 census shows the Gomersall family - at that date George, Kate and David - living at 35 Iveridge Grove, Hunslet. Leeds born George, aged 24, was a forge labourer and Kate, also 24 and born in Bristol was a tailoress.

Kate Peniston, eldest child [of 3] of David [b.1851 Leeds] and Mary Ann [b.1854 Bristol]. Born about 1877 Fishponds, Bristol. The 1881 census records the family living at 10 Burton Terrace, Hunslet. The family at the time consists of Her father, David, mother, Mary Ann, Kate herself and her four month old brother Frederick . Her father is employed as an Engine Fitter. The 1891 census records her living at 9 Hillidge Grove, Hunslet with her parents and younger sister Florence. She marries to George Gomersall on 23rd September 1896 at St Mary the Virgin [Hunslet Parish Church]. At the time of the marriage, George is living at 4 Iveridge Grove with his new wife and her parents. The 1901 census records her living at 35 Iveridge Grove with her husband and their son David. Their daughter, Clarice, is living at 4 Iverson Grove with her grandparents and aunt [Kate’s younger sister, Florence]. The 1911 census records them living at 159 Jack Lane with their children David [b.1900], Florence Kathleen [b.1902] and Ada [b.1905]. The census records that the couple have had five children, of which only four have survived. Clarice, the eldest child is still living with her grandmother [widowed] and her aunt [now married] and the aunt’s husband. She is employed as a sewing machinist.

An exact location is difficult to give. However the placement of this terrace house is EXACTLY the same as the one I was born in, at 19 Clovelly Place Hunslet, just off Rowland Road. The placement of all the windows,doors,steps up to the kitchen/dining area and the garden wall complete with iron railings,(until removed for the WW2 effort) are identical.

Photographs such as this are grist-to-the-mill to an amateur ancestry sleuth like me. Thankfully, unlike the many such old photos stored in boxes in peoples homes, of persons forever to remain anonymous, someone has preserved the image and identity of the dearly departed here. It is surely dated 1900 given the obvious age of the infant in arms who is David born that very year. His mother Kate, here aged about 23, was born in Bristol in 1877 to David and Mary Peniston. She married Leeds born George Gomersall, and had at-least two further children, Florence, and Ada. The puzzle here though, is the house in the photo numbered 11. On the 1901 census, the Gomersall's lived at 35, Iveridge Grove, Hunslet, whilst Kate's parents - the Penistons, were living across the street at number 4. The 1901 census also suggests that the little girl - Clarice May, Baptised 1897, and seen here, was staying overnight with her Grandparents at number 4. Then, on the next census of 1911, Clarice then aged 13, was again listed as living with her Grandmother who by then had been widowed, and was living at Parkfields Mount, Beeston. The 1911 census shows that the Gomersall's themselves were then living at 159, Jack Lane, Hunslet. George Gomersall's occupation as a forge worker lays testament to the fact that Hunslet was the 19th Century engine of Leeds, sadly now forgotten.

Looking on Ancestry.co.uk I found the marriage certificate for Kate Peniston ( born at Fishponds, Bristol around 1878 ) and George Gomersall, and at the time of the wedding ( 1897 )George was living at 4 Iveridge Grove. The 1901 Census has them living at 35 Iveridge Grove ( although the actual census page has copious notes on it, written by the enumerator so this is not definitive! ) By 1911, they were living at 159 Jack Lane, according to the census. All of which doesn't really help identify the house in the photograph, which indeed does have what looks like the number 11 painted half way up the left side of the door frame.

Thanks to everyone who left a comment on this photograph. Kate Gomersall nee Peniston was my Grandmother. I know she lived at the Iveridge and Jack Lane addresses but hoped someone would recognize the house and tell me which one.The Clovelly Place suggestion I need to investigate as I have not come upon this address for them. Thanks again.

Have now found the answer to this question. The address shown at the time of David Peniston Gomersall's christening is 11 Iveridge Terrace.It looks very much as though that's where the photograph was taken.

Looking at image 9682, which shows Iveridge Terrace in the background, I believe from the position of the houses that the one visible through the gap may be no. 11. The door and windows appear to match this one.

reading these e mails i found most intriguing,although gomersall must have been a popular name in 1900,s a lot of addresses and occupations rang bells for me,my grandfather thomas gomersall born 1871 and grandmother miriam born 1872 ran the parkfield hotel on jack lane and he was an iron forgeman,they once lived in clovelly avenue and possibly khandella place,when my mother married she moved to parkfield mount too,could these families be linked or is it just a coincidence?

Anne, the Parkfiled Hotel wasn’t the only pub that your grandfather ran. He had started off at the Old Dusty Miller on Elland Road. He took over the lease from his older brother when he died on 3rd June 1902 [having only held the lease from Tetley’s since October 1901]. He remained at the Old Dusty Miller until it was closed because the license was refused renewal in 1921 [not for anything that he had done wrong]. He then went to the Falcon at Great Wilson Street for a short time before moving on to the Parkfield. Drop me an email if you want more specific details and dates.

As I commented earlier, photos such as this, along with the identities of the people therein, are highly prized by ancestry searchers. Occasionally, one's search can lead to hidden and curious elements of social history, and subsequent questions. This photo is just so. It concerns Kate's husband - George Gomersall, and his 1889 Baptism. Initially, the surprise was that George (born 1877) was aged 12 at his Baptism. But the register recording the event - as just one entry of 16 - also shows, only seven of those being given to the Church, were under the age of two. This then left the other nine Baptised who weren't infants, but of whom George Gomersall was actually the youngest. The ages of the others ranged from 13yrs to 20yrs, but the real gem among the entries, were a mother called Rachel Fozzard - aged 44, alongside her two daughters - Clara aged 18, and Louisa aged 16. One cannot help but wonder why such anomalies were so apparently common back in 19th Century Hunslet ... not just industrious folk, but God fearing too. We must hope that God blessed them.

Very interesting letter from Christian Liits.Very knowledgeable on the Gomersall family.Thomas Gomersall was my Grandfather by adoption.Emma Gomersall b1878 was my Grandmother.Emma married and had a child,my mother.Sadly Emma died in 1919 and Thomas and Miriam adopted her.Thomas must have taken over the Old Dusty Miller from his brother John.He must have died young.I know nothing about my grandmother Emma but would be delighted if anyone has any information on anyone connected to this family or knew of them at all.

Re. Barry's comments, My Grandfather George Gomersall had already been christened at St. Mary's, Hunslet on the 05 Nov 1876. Why twice, who knows.
