Description: 1964.
This photograph was taken from the garden of 254 Dewsbury Road (former surgery of Mr. H.W. Freer Dental Surgeon) about the end of 1964, and looks straight across the road. The Wool Shop at no.227 was previously run by Mrs. Edna Pickering but had closed down quite a while before this photograph. Chas Thomas at no.225 was run by Mr. Charlie Thomas whose son Martin took over the shop later on. In the early 1950s the shop sold mostly newspapers, tobacco and sweets and had a lending library on one wall. Mr. Thomas later expanded to sell toys and was one of the first shops on Dewsbury Road to have a cigarette machine. Just out of shot past the red phone box on the left was a grocers and bakers shop belonging to George Flockton. As well as selling groceries and bread he was known for his cakes and bakery items made on the premises. Photograph and information courtesy of Noel Freer.
