Golden Lion Hotel, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Chris Barber
1950s. View shows jazz trombonist Chris Barber having his hair cut by Sister Rosetta Tharpe at the Golden Lion Hotel on Lower Briggate. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an American singer who mixed gospel music with jazz and blues and was a big influence to many jazz and blues musicians both in the UK and the US. She was booked by Chris Barber for a tour of the UK in the 1950s which included performances in Leeds. Barber has been the leader of the Chris Barber Jazz Band since the 1950s and is still performing today (2012). Photograph courtesy of Terry Cryer.
