July 2012. View of Low Hall Mills located in Low Hall Place. The junction of Low Hall Place is adjacent to number 25 Holbeck Lane. In this recent view the mills are looking derelict with many broken window panes. The buildings date from 1874 and there is a datestone above the arched entrance to this effect. The Post Office Directory dating from 1882 lists Low Hall Mills as the premises of woollen and union cloth manufacturer, John Whitehead. He also had premises at number 41 Park Place and his residence was at number 44 Spencer Place. In recent times the mills had been occupied by S.P.M. (Selby Plumber's Merchants Ltd.)

was stink bomb alley just to the left of the arch and holbeck swimming baths just at the end of this short street behind photographer

In the 1960s part of Low Hall Mills was occupied by Kidds Business Services whose retail outlet was on the Headrow. Kidds supplied and serviced all kinds of office equipment and they had a department in the Mills which made and repaired desks and chairs. It was whilst working at Kidds that I first saw photocopying machines. They were very primitive and were not much rated by most of the staff. Kidds were taken over by Ryman.
