May, 1953. In this image, May Day celebrations are taking place at Sheepscar Council School. The May Queen is seated on a dais, beneath a decorated parasol, surrounded by her attendants. The girls are wearing white dresses, ankle socks and white shoes and have wreaths of flowers in their hair. The boys are smartly dressed, two in waistcoats and one bearing a cushion for the May Queen's crown. In the background the exterior walls of the school and ornate windows are visible. Sheepscar Council School, now demolished, was located on Wilmington Grove at the junction with Barrack Street, off Meanwood Road.

I went to this school and remember the class being taken to a field in Cookridge around this time to pick flowers for the May Day celebration. Swathes of buttercups and daisies were picked in addition to greenery and other flowers I was too young to identify. At the end of the afternoon one of the teachers had tied lollipops to a tree which we were convinced had grown there - I wished for a lollipop tree for our garden! Back at school all our gleanings were put into buckets of water to keep them fresh for the following day. I think our class had been chosen to pick flowers because we weren't involved in the maypole dancing or the crowning procedure.
