Coronation Street Party, Sissons Crescent
Description:
1953. Image shows young local residents taking part in a street party in Sissons Crescent to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It is believed that the photograph was taken in the garden of Mrs. Cairns of number 46 Sissons Crescent. Some of the children on the back row include (from left to right) June Anderson, Myra Clutterbuck, B(?) Fenton, Raymond Tyson, Jean Anderson and John Ellener. On the front row, 6th from left, is Gilbert Stone (who later emigrated to New Zealand), 4th from right is Peter Stone. Peter's grandparents lived at number 42 Sissons Crescent, and were John and Annie Ellener. Their immediate neighbours were the Madeley's and the Benn's.

I lived at 33 Sissons Crescent (the house shown on the left behind the children) from 1965 to 1980, when I moved out. My parents lived their until their deaths. My dad had a motorbike and sidecar combination. I remember Mrs Cairns and also recall a Mr and Mrs Whitfield, Mrs Barraclough(no 35 I think) as well as the Furlong family, Mr and Mrs Whitaker and their son Robert, and our next door neighbours the Sharmans. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers us.

The blond-haired boy between Myra Clutterbuck and Raymond Tyson, is Christopher Fenton. Second from the left in the front row is his brother Peter Fenton. Their sisters are seated 6th and 7th from the right on the front Row. Their names are Bernadette and Teresa Fenton respectively. The Fenton children lived at 31 Sissons Crescent with their mother Mary. Behind and to the right of the two Fenton girls is a boy with a paper hat on his head. This is John Cairns, the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Cairns. John Cairns is also the uncle of Peter Cairns (Stone?). Peter Cairns, 4th from the left, front row, is definitely the grandson of Mr and Mrs Cairns, John and Annie. Mr Cairns worked at the Middleton Broom Colliery and always arrived home with a black face. The girl 1st from the right, front row is possibly Carol Gudgeon and the boy 3rd from the right her brother (can't recall his name). The Gudgeons lived further up the street the Cairns’ house. The Cairns, Gudgeon and Fenton children and Raymond Tyson all played in the street together. They were joined by Kenny Madeley who moved to Sissons Crescent after this photo was taken.

l was sorry to hear that Bessie George as i knew her has passed away. In 1961 i went to America and in 1962 Bessie came out to work like me as a nanny. We all grew up in Sissons Cresent enjoying a lot of good times playing in the street, games like Rounders, Hopscotch, Whip and Top, we always had a Skipping rope that stretched across the street. great days. 3/11/2013.
