Description:
1921. Image shows the Summer Surveying School class of 1921, seated in a charabanc on the occasion of a class outing. Members of the class can also be seen in image 2007328_163150. The Secondary & Technical School was opened in 1909 on 4 acres of land beteween Fountain Street and Scatcherd Lane in Morley. It was renamed Morley Grammar School in 1930, and became Morley Academy in 2011.

Wow, if you're at all imaginative, this is one heck of a photograph. That contraption, they gave the odd name Charabanc, was what we have long called a bus...but just look at it. Imagine riding in that thing, and it was 1921. I can certainly remember driving on cobbled roads, but doing so in a vehicle with rock hard solid tyres, and with no suspension to speak of, I cannot imagine. Note how the only visible concession to passenger comfort, is a fold-away soft top, and what appear to be rolls of rolled-up side curtains on each door. The good old days..?? I don't think so. Tickets please?
