Atmospheric painting by Pete Lapish showing Briggate at night around the year 1935, a scene which was memorable to the artist from his own childhood a little later. The painting depicts a cold, wet and windy day with suspended hanging lights bouncing light and shadows off the buildings. There is not much traffic on the road apart from trams, which could be heard approaching from a distance, with rumbling from the wheels and whining from the overhead wiring, which also gave intermittent flashing. The image shows trams on routes 1 and 3, with a further tram in the distance. More of Pete Lapish's images can be seen on his website www.petelapish.art
