Roundhay Park Zoo, "Sooty
November 1923. View shows a smartly-dressed man outside the monkey enclosure at Roundhay Park Zoo, Canal Gardens. He is holding one monkey while passing a piece of food to another monkey who is sticking an arm through a hole in the cage. Below this is a box collecting money for "Sooty's Appeal" - this appeal, organised by Mr Trigg of the Parks Department, was part of the Yorkshire Evening Post's "Boots for Bairns" appeal to provide boots and shoes for poor children across the city. We are unsure who Sooty was - maybe one of the monkeys? This image was digitised as part of the ‘Future Prospects of Urban Parks’ project, conducted by the University of Leeds in partnership with Leeds City Council, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (grant number: AH/N001788/1)
